Sonko, who enjoys strong support among young Senegalese voters, later reacted on social media, saying he would "sleep with a light heart".
The political fallout comes as Senegal faces increasing economic strain, with the country’s public debt reaching the equivalent of 132% of gross domestic product, according to figures cited by the International Monetary Fund.
The dismissal followed a parliamentary session earlier this week in which Sonko publicly criticized Faye’s handling of the country’s debt crisis.
Analysts have noted that Faye’s rise to the presidency was closely linked to Sonko’s popularity and political backing, making the split between the two leaders particularly significant.
